• We stayed in La Maison d'ete, the smaller gite at Le Jardin De Berger with our family in late July.

This in the most stunningly beautiful and totally peaceful, tranquil location with far reaching views over fields of sunflowers, vines and maize. We enjoyed relaxing on the many loungers, swimming in the pool and having meals in the shade of the pear trees. Most evenings we cycled around the local area to take in the scenery.

We enjoyed the local boulangerie for delicious almond croissants for breakfast and used the supermarket 15 mins away to stock up for barbecues in the evening.

The pretty gite was well provided with everything we needed including a good coffee machine. Bronwen and John were available if we wanted them but discreetly left us to enjoy our privacy.

I would thoroughly recommend Le Jardin de Berger for a relaxing comfortable holiday in a beautiful, rural location.

  • We stayed for two weeks in July in the two bedroom Gite with our dog and two teenage children. John and Bronwen were excellent hosts, their house was on site and they were available if you needed anything, however they just left you to get on with your holiday. Prior to our arrival they did a small shop for us so we had enough for supper and breakfast. The Gite is in a stunning location with fantastic countryside views, I've never felt so relaxed whilst on holiday. The accomodation was a good size, very clean, nicely furnished and tastefully decorated. There were plenty of towels for both inside and pool towels, clean bedding and towels were replaced for the second week, although the Gite did have it's own washing machine. The pool was a good size with plenty of loungers and was very welcome when we had 45 degrees. The outdoor area of the Gite was private with both dining and lounging tables and chairs and allowed you to appreciate the fantastic sunsets, it also had a bbq which we made very good use of. The first week we were the only guests, however when another family of four arrived for the second week it didn't have any impact on our stay as there was always plenty of room in the pool and sun loungers for everyone. The Gite is ideally situated closely to the town of Barbezieux (10 minutes drive) with a large Leclerc, nice boulangeries/patisseries and a good Auberg, Barbezieux has everything you need. A short drive away (30 min) you have the lovely town of Angoulême with plenty to see and some lovely restaurants - we can heartily recommend Chez Paul. Again, about a 30 min drive you have the town of Cognac with plenty to see and cognac houses to visit and it is lovely down by the river. The town of Saintes is also well worth a visit. In summary the Gite provides a fantastic base to explore the Charente region and beyond. We highly recommend staying here and will definitely will be looking to holiday again at Le Jardin du Berger.

  • We stayed in the large gite in August 2018 with our two children of 8 and 5 and our parents in their 70s. The gite was very welcoming and spotlessly clean, a home from home. The boys especially liked the swimming pool and the area with the net to play sports. The gite is very well equipped and Bromwen kindly picked up some shopping for our first evening. We loved the location and the house and hope to return again soon.

  • Such a beautiful setting with fields of sunflowers and maize surronding the gites. Add picturesque sunsets and wonderful night skies - well you are certainly in an amazing place.
We stayed in Le Pommier 21/7/18 for 2 weeks. The weather was amazing, the pool fab (and much needed) and the gites really well equipped - catered to our every need. From the coffee machine to the pool towels, the supplied toiletries to the offer of getting a few supplies in for us for our arrival.
There are 4 bikes provided and an early morning ride by the fields and vineyards is great. However, if that isn't your thing there are many places to visit nearby.
The owners, Bronwen and John, are lovely and nothing is too much trouble. They are there if you need them, but totally respect your privacy. However, I like to get to know new people, so we had a few chats. We also had fun playing with Pippa and Theo (their gorgeous dogs). One loves a ball and the other is very bouncy. However, I know some people are wary of dogs, so in case you are, don't be put off as they are confined. We wanted to make friends with them though and we were so glad we did.
So missing the idyllic place already.
Really all I can say is go, I'm sure you won't regret it 😊

  • I loved my holiday here in early August, 2017. Bronwen and John have spent a lot if time thinking about what people need when they stay, from pool towels to a coffee machine, bicycles you can ride to the boulangerie for fresh bread and the kind offer to get some shopping for your first evening. They simply left the receipt and I felt trusted and not rushed to settle up, which makes it feel comfortable.
When we had car trouble, John kindly dropped me into Barbezieux and it all went to making us feel that they both care that you have a good holiday.
The house, land and pool are lovely and I felt relaxed quickly, which is so important.
With wildlife and sunsets it's a wonderfully inspiring place to take photographs or be creative if you are so inclined.
I hope to stay there again and recommend it highly.

  • My family of four (2 young children) stayed at le Pommier for two weeks this summer. My parents joined us staying in the other property.

We had a lovely stay here and we were all impressed with the facilities on offer, from the soft towels, comfy beds to the DVD library and garden games. It's clear lots of thought has gonr in to making guests feel at home.

The open plan living area was perfect for family time and the bedrooms spacious. We really appreciated the Baylis & Harding toiletries. Obviously the pool was a huge hit, quite refreshing at first but the ideal spot to cool off plus lots of shade around the pool to keep out of the strong sun. It does get very warm!

Supplying bikes to explore the local area was a great bonus. I enjoyed morning rides to the windmill and we all took turns to cycle to the local bakery to get breakfast. The roads around are very quiet!

The local area is beautiful, we loved spotting birds of prey sat atop of fences and pylons and lizard spotting at the house itself. We enjoyed days out at Aubeterre, Angouleme, the water park at Jonzac and whilst it's quite a journey the beach at St Palais-sur-mer was well worth the drive. We also took a trip to Bordeaux and enjoyed the science museum and shops.

We loved our stay and would be happy to return.

  • Superb gite!
My husband and I spent a great 10 days at Le Pommier in Le Garden du Berger. We arrived for our stay in the second part of October. It was an easy 5 hour drive from Caen in Northern France. We had all day sunshine for almost all of our holiday set in the wonderful Charente countryside.

Le Pommier is an extremely well equipped and furnished gite. The bed was extremely comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed to cater for ourselves and in deed we could also watch British TV if we had the time! It was a bit late in the season for us to have a dip in the swimming pool!
We visited several local towns and villages including Angouleme, Jonzac, Aubeterre and Chalais which holds an excellent market every week. Within a 20 minute drive there is a wonderful restaurant serving food in the traditional French style (Le Poirier). You have to book ahead to be sure of a table.
Our hosts John and Bronwen made us feel completely at home and stocked the fridge with food items for our arrival. The local town,Barbezieux, 15 minutes away, has two supermarkets and being in the Cognac and Bordeaux areas are stocked with wonderful wines.
We had a great stay at Le Pommier and would highly recommend it.

  • We stayed at Le Pommier in November and we had a fabulous week. The gite is equipped to a very high standard with an exceptionally comfortable bed and high quality bed linen and towels. The kitchen was superb and had everything you could need. We really appreciated the welcome pack which was so thoughtfully provided by Bronwen and John. They were excellent hosts - on hand should we have any queries but not intrusive.
The setting is perfect for a break away from it all and the scenery is breathtaking. We thoroughly enjoyed our week and there is lots to see and do.We visited La Rochelle,Bordeaux,Cognac and Limoges. The local town Barbezieux was beguiling - we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the well stocked supermarkets and the thrice weekly market which had some excellent local cheeses and charcuterie. The shops stock a huge selection of Bordeaux wines at very reasonable prices and the Pineau fortified wine is fantastic! We ate out well in the local restaurants but cooking in the gite was a pleasure.
We will be returning - Bronwen and John should be very proud of what they offer - it is of an exceptionally high standard and reasonably priced.
    Tracy and John.

  • Wonderful!
We spent the first 2 weeks of September in Le Pommier. It offers, without question, quality accommodation with everything you could wish for in a gite. It is spacious with a light and airy feel with nice touches throughout such as the coffee maker complete with coffee pods all ready to go. It really is a home from home with all manner of entertainments available... the large TV and DVD library and radio/ ipod docking system and a reliable internet connection. The new bathrooms are a real pleasure to use. The gite is surrounded by views of the gently rolling countryside complete with sunflowers. There are seating areas all around the property so you can wander and enjoy the different vistas. The pool area is attractive and there are outside net games on offer. The location is quite idyllic and well situated to be able to explore the surrounding areas in all directions with ease. Bronwen and John are delightful hosts and even offer a shopping service to keep you fed upon arrival.
Le Pommier is difficult to fault!

  • The Frisby family stayed in Le Pommier for a week in August 2016, we wish we had booked a longer stay! When we visited the sunflowers in the next field were in full bloom and an abiding memory is that of watching a hot air ballon glide across a sky lit by a glorious sunset.
The accommodation is bright and clean with every amenity that you could hope or wish for with the notable additions of luxury items (for self catering accommodation) such as an excellent coffee maker with coffee pods, good quality toiletries & towels and freshly scented rooms. Facilities such as the wi-fi connection, large tv screen, dvd player with dvd library, ipod docking station, two bathrooms and large, clean swimming pool made this an ideal place to stay with our teenage daughters.
Bronwen and John are marvellous hosts; friendly and helpful without being intrusive and they go out of their way to make your stay comfortable. They offer a shopping service for your evening meal / breakfast which was invaluable to us as we had a long day travelling.
We cannot praise Le Jardin Du Berger enough, we had a wonderful holiday and would love to go back.

  • Le Pommier was a wonderful place to stay for our family holiday (my husband, me and 2 daughters aged 13 and 11). Lovely spacious accommodation, with plenty of places to sit and relax and read (or plug into WiFi and watch YouTube, depending on your preference!). The pool was very welcome in the heat - big enough and deep enough to swim properly and play in.

We didn't do a lot of sightseeing as it was a little too hot for it, but enjoyed Angouleme and Cognac and the local villages.

We did make good use of the lovely sewing studio, with some brilliant support and encouragement from Bronwen, resulting in 3 successfully completed cushion projects by me and the girls. To be honest, I could have spent the whole holiday in there!

  • My wife, two children (Luca 4, and Anya 1) and I stayed in Le Pommier in July 2016. We hadn't been to this area of France before, and wasn't sure what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised, and had a fantastic holiday.

The Gite is surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside, where the children could play safely, whilst we relaxed watching the amazing sunsets across the fields of sunflowers. A truly spectacular sight.

There is so much to do in the area we were never short places to visit, all within 30-45 mins. There are also a number of river beaches nearby, that the children really enjoyed.

The owners John and Bronwen were very friendly. A really nice touch was that they offered to buy a few supplies from the supermarket on our behalf, in advance of our arrival. Arriving quite late with children, this was so useful.

We had such a relaxing and enjoyable holiday, we will definitely return. There is still so much more to explore. Although Luca, would be quite happy to stay in the pool!

  • This was a part of France we hadn't explored before and it was a real treat. The sunflower fields and vineyards surrounding the property were the perfect backdrop. Bronwyn and John made us very welcome without being intrusive and Le Pommier was spacious and well kitted-out. It would have been possible to spend all our time at Le Jardin du Berger but the surrounding villages were also a delight. Impossible to fault.
